Your lawn sees all kinds of activities throughout the year. From playing fetch with the dog in the spring to salting your sidewalks during the winter, your Muncie property can suffer quite a bit. Thankfully, there is a wide range of solutions for most lawn damage. Here are some of the treatments All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC recommends when your lawn needs expert repair.

4 Repairs Your Lawn May Need Throughout the Year (Part 1)

1. Pet Stains

While we love our furry friends, they can be one of the worst offenders to lawns. They run all over the yard, stomping on new grass, and often like to dig, usually in the absolute worst places. What really causes most of the damage is their urine, which has a high concentration of nitrogen. When mixed with nitrogen that’s already in the soil, it can cause dry, yellow patches, also known as nitrogen burns.

You can prevent nitrogen burns in your lawn by training your dog to urinate in a specific area of the yard, possibly a wooded area or behind the garage. After they’re done, soak the stained areas with a hose to wash the urine away. You can also apply horticultural lime to the affected spots. Be sure to follow the directions on the package as using too much lime can also damage your lawn.

2. Weed & Thatch Overgrowth

Weeds can quickly overtake your lawn. Keep this intrusive vegetation at bay by using a commercial weed killer. Be sure to follow the directions on the bag, or call our office for our recommendations. When you mow, don’t cut the grass too short. Longer grass keeps sunlight from reaching the weeds and starves them of the nutrition they need to grow.

Thatch can be beneficial to lawns, but too much of it can be detrimental. This layer of living and dead debris acts the same as mulch, conserving moisture in the soil while allowing water and air to reach the roots. If it becomes too thick it can turn your beautiful yard into a breeding ground for disease, insects, and grubs. Aerating the soil can break up thatch just enough while still benefiting your yard, and using a mulching mower can prevent thatch buildup altogether.
