Top 3 Winter Lawn-Care Tips

We’ve already had our fair share of snow here in Indiana. You may not have even seen your grass for days—and like most things, out of sight, out of mind. However, winter weather doesn’t mean forgetting your lawn altogether. There are still some things you can do to maintain your lawn during the cold Indiana months so it can emerge healthy and green come spring. Here are some top tips from fellow lawn-care experts that our team at All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC would like to pass along to our customers in Muncie, Richmond, Portland, and the surrounding areas.

1. Stay off the grass.

Okay, we know you may have kids, and telling them to stay off the grass when it snows is cruel and impossible. They have snow forts to build and snow angels to create. However, as much as possible, avoid walking on the grass or driving on it unnecessarily, especially when it’s frosted or frozen. Grass becomes brittle when it’s cold, and when you walk or drive over it, it becomes susceptible to breakage.

2. Clear away leaves & overgrown shrubs.

We recommend that you clear away leaves and trim back shrubs late in the fall. However, if life got busy and you haven’t done it yet, it’s not too late. Getting rid of leaf piles, brush, and overgrown shrubs can help you avoid snow mold as well as deter rodents from seeing your yard as a safe haven.

3. Avoid harmful ice-melting products.

Not all ice-melting products are created equal when it comes to your lawn health. In fact, many ice melts can be quite damaging. However, you can find some products on the market that can keep your driveway and sidewalks clear of ice while still protecting your grass. Because our team also specializes in snow removal, we can help you determine the right products to use, or you can just hire us to keep your snow plowed and your driveway safe.
