Weed Control

Control Weeds in Your Backyard with These 4 Tips

With spring quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about the flowers and vegetables you want to plant in your garden. Maybe you’ve already decided because you’re just as eager as we are for more sunshine, green grass, and warmer temps. If you struggled last year to keep up with all the weeds growing in your backyard, All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC has some tips that may help make this outdoor chore easier than ever.

1. Pull Weeds Often

It may sound too simple but one of the best ways to control weeds is to pull them often. You want to get them out of the ground before they have time to spread or grow strong roots. Set up a schedule for yourself so you don’t end up pulling weeds for an entire afternoon. Consider setting aside 10 minutes each day to work in the garden, or plan to do some weeding twice a week, like Wednesdays and Sundays.

2. Take Advantage of Tools

Tools are your best friends when it comes to weeding as they can make it easier and faster than if you were to do it by hand. A few examples of weeding tools include the following:

  • Cape Cod weeder: Small enough for weeds in sidewalk cracks, but strong enough to pull large weeds
  • Hori knife: Versatile gardening tool that can dig out deep-rooted weeds, cut twine, and open bags of soil
  • Stand-up weeder: Ideal for those who are limited physically and find it difficult to kneel or bend over

3. Pull When Soil Is Moist

The best time to weed is when the soil is moist and soft. The wet soil makes it easy to yank out the complete weed — roots and all. If you wait until the soil is dry, you’re more likely to leave the roots behind, resulting in more weeds to pull later on.

4. Use Mulch

Mulch works as a barrier for weeds as it can help keep them from sprouting while also maintaining moist soil for your plants and flowers to grow. If you have quite a few weeds in your garden, lay down newspaper, cardboard, or a weed barrier first, and then top it with the mulch of your choice.
