Signs That These 4 Lawn Pests Are Invading Your Yard

With the summer season in full swing, you want to have a lush, green lawn you can enjoy all season long. The problems begin when you spot any number of lawn pests on your beautiful Muncie lawn. You can prevent these pests from wreaking major havoc on your lawn by identifying them as soon as possible. All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC often sees these common lawn pests on Muncie properties. Keep reading to learn more about these pests and the different signs that they may be invading your lawn.

1. Chinch Bugs

Chinch bugs are small and difficult to see. They are only about as long as the tip of a pencil. These bugs feed on moisture that is in the grass. Once they eat, they release saliva into the grass which prevents the grass from absorbing water, making it more prone to drought. They can also leave behind yellow patches of grass that will eventually die.

2. Sod Webworms

Sod webworms are a type of moth larvae that eats grass blades. They are one inch long and are brown or green with dark spots. These annoying bugs leave jagged edges on the grass blades, turning them raggedy with only the plant veins remaining. Sod webworms also leave behind small, dead patches of grass that end up turning into large brown spots.

3. Cutworms

Cutworms are striped caterpillars that are about two inches long. They chew the grass away at the roots and drag the blades down with them as they burrow holes into the lawn. You may also see dead patches or dead spots of brown grass throughout the lawn if they’re living in your yard.

4. Billbugs

Billbugs are an especially annoying menace to your lawn, as they destroy grass throughout their entire life cycle. As they chew up grass blades, they lay eggs inside of them. Then they hatch and eat the grass as they make their way out. These insects leave behind irregular-looking brown patches as well as hollow grass stems. You may also spot huddles of billbug larvae around the base of the grass or in topsoil.
