Winter Lawn Care

5 Easy Landscape Care Tips for the Winter Season

While it doesn’t take much to care for your landscape during winter, it should not be neglected altogether. It’s not too late in the season to take extra precautions. The experts at All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC offers these suggestions for preventing unnecessary damage to your lawn, while protecting your landscape during the coldest months of the year.

1. Clean the Lawn

Be sure all items are removed from your lawn and landscape. Not only will this protect your lawn but it will also keep your personal belongings in better condition. Large objects left on the grass can create dead spots that you’ll need to treat once spring arrives. Avoid these bare dead spots by removing items such as outdoor toys, lawn furniture, lawn care tools, and the like.

2. Keep Off the Lawn

Parking vehicles, snowblowers, or snowmobiles on the lawn can be hazardous to your turf. Even walking on the lawn over and over during the winter months can create worn and dead paths. While grass is dormant during the cold months, it can still sustain irreversible damage from consistent, heavy traffic.

3. Prune Plants

This may seem counterproductive, but pruning plants in the late dormant winter season can do a world of good for plants in the spring. Trimming down plants and bushes in late winter makes way for new growth to appear within only a few short months.

4. Spread Mulch

Adding mulch around trees, plants, and shrubs will help prevent erosion and water loss during the winter months. January is a good time of year to check if more mulch needs to be added. Windy snowstorms, snowplows, and shoveling can accidentally carry mulch away from the landscape.

5. Protect Plants

Shield trees, bushes, and plants from the harsh cold temperatures and damaging winter weather. Wrap wire mesh around the base of young trees, apply burlap wrapping to evergreen bushes, cover with a winter protection blanket, or place winter shelters over your shrubs.
