Emerald Ash Borer

How to Prevent the Spread of Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer (EAB) is an intrusive and destructive beetle that attacks ash trees. It can cause destructive damage to these trees, destroying ash tree stock and complete ash tree canopies in no time. One of the best ways to fight off the EAB is to prevent its spread altogether. At All Brothers Lawn Squad LLC, we recommend applying these best practices to keep the trees on your property safe from the invasive emerald ash borer.

How Does the EAB Affect Trees?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, EAB larvae can cause severe damage or even kill trees by the way they move throughout and feed on the tree. These devastating insects tunnel under the bark and feed on the part of the tree that moves water and sugars up and down the trunk. With this type of movement and activity, a tree has little hope of having a long and prosperous life.

How Can You Prevent the EAB from Spreading?

There are a few steps you can take to stop the spread of this aggressive beetle. Practice the tips below and you can provide a safe environment for the ash trees on your property and those in your neighborhood.

Tip #1: Don’t Move Wood

EABs spread when infested wood is moved from one location to another. This usually occurs when people bring wood along for camping, but it can also happen when cutting and hauling firewood for heating your home or purchasing EAB-infested ash trees from a nursery or landscape company. However, this rarely takes place due to enforced EAB guidelines. Remember this simple rule when using firewood, “Buy it where you burn it.”

Tip #2: Diversify Your Landscape

If you don’t want to deal with these annoying bugs, consider planting various shrubs and trees on your property. We recommend visiting a local nursery or professional garden center and asking the experts there which types of trees and shrubs are best for your specific location.
