Fertilization

3 Reasons to Fertilize Your Lawn This Fall

Now that summer is gone and fall is upon us, don’t believe the fallacy that there isn’t much left to do in your yard. It couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact, fertilizing your lawn right before winter is one of the most important things you can do for the well-being of your lawn. If you want a fuller, greener lawn in the spring, you need to have your lawn fertilized in the fall. Not sure where to start? Call the professionals at All Brothers Lawn Squad, LLC to get your treatment scheduled. You can fertilize your lawn any time, but the best time is in the fall for three major reasons.

1. Moisture

The morning dew of fall delivers moisture that is essential in helping the fertilizer be absorbed by the turf. The optimal time of year for this is 2 to 3 weeks before the ground freezes. A general idea of timing for the first frost can be found online, and can be used as an indicator of when to call to get your treatment scheduled.

2. Stamina

Fertilizing in the fall gives the grass a chance to build stamina before a freezing winter. Fertilize too early and you could be dealing with scorched grass, and too late can lead to weak grass dying when it gets too cold. Finding that sweet spot in mid-October will give your grass the best chance to survive the winter and thrive in the spring.

3. Rain and Run Off

A good rule of thumb is to avoid fertilizing your lawn before a heavy rain. A heavy rain can result in run off that stunts the ability of the fertilizer to do its job. While there is less probability that you will get hit with significant rainfall in the fall than in the spring (April, May and June see an average rainfall of approximately 4.5 inches, compared to October’s approximate average rainfall of 3.3 inches), it is still good practice to look at the forecast before fertilizing. Further, make sure that your grass has had a chance to dry from a previous rainfall prior to fertilizing.

Now is the time to pick up the phone and call All Brothers Lawn Squad to get your fertilizer application scheduled. Spring will be here before you know it and a quick phone call now can give you the best lawn in the neighborhood in a few short months. Contact us today at (765) 371-4186.
